PMMRAC recent visit to the Yandeyarra community brought many memorable moments, but one story truly touched our hearts – the story of young ZC and his loyal dog, Buddy.
On the first day the Environmental Health crew delivered dog cages to ZC’s Nan’s house in preparation for the desexing of five family dogs. Everything went smoothly – all five dogs were safely desexed, except for one: Buddy.
Buddy is a large, strong, and very protective dog. He is clearly very loved by ZC, and the bond between them was obvious from the start. On the second day, when the Environmental Health and AMRRIC crew returned, they found Buddy already in the cage, with ZC sitting quietly beside him, gently comforting his furry friend. Nan was there to support both, her grandson and Buddy.
Buddy didn't like the cage and became more and more stressed by the attempts to move and prepare him for the surgery. After Dr. Kirsty gave him carefully a mild sedative, helping him to stay calm, it was possible to transport Buddy to the clinic to start the procedure.
What made the biggest difference, though, was having ZC by his side.

The vet team warmly welcomed ZC into the surgery and explained everything step by step. ZC stayed strong and calm, asking questions and watching over Buddy the entire time.
It was truly heartwarming to see a young boy show so much care and responsibility for his dog.
A few days later, while the team went to Marble Bar helping with more desexing in Goodabinya, our team member from the Environmental Health crew gave Nan a call to check in. Her update was beautiful:
“All the dogs are doing great, and the family was down the waterhole, cooking kangaroo tail while Buddy splashed happily in the shallow water.”

These are the moments and stories, that remind us why we do what we do.
Thank you Yandeyarra community, and thank you ZC and Buddy, for showing us the power of love, patience, and connection!
