Strength In Our Stories: For Now & Future Generations

Aboriginal child

Indigenous Literacy Day is celebrated annually on the first Wednesday in September and proudly produced and presented by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). It honours the rich stories, cultures, and languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

This important day also shines a light on the literacy barriers faced by children in remote communities, where access to books and learning materials is often limited. It encourages support for programs that deliver books, especially in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages as well as other educational tools, with the goal of closing the literacy gap and ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have the same learning opportunity as others.

About Indigenous Literacy Foundation:

Suzy Wilson, owner of Riverbend Books in Brisbane, founded The Indigenous Literacy Foundation in 2004. She launched the Riverbend Readers Challenge with the aim of raising funds to improve literacy outcomes in remote Aboriginal communities national wide.

Together with The Fred Hollows Foundation, The Riverbend Readers Challenge turned into the Indigenous Literacy Project in 2007, and in 2011, it became The Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

The ILF does not receive any Government funding and relies  on the generosity of supporters and sponsors. It is proudly supported by the Australian Publishers Association, the Australian Bookseller Association, the Australian Society of Authors, and the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
